When you hear McDonald’s, what comes to mind? Some people are die-hard Egg McMuffin fans. Others think of a crisp fountain Diet Coke.
The fast-food restaurant chain has many iconic menu choices, but some of its most famous items are seasonal releases. Like the McRib, for instance, which has a cult following and constantly pops on and off the menu.
For me, though, McDonald’s is all about the Shamrock Shake.
When do Shamrock Shakes come out?
In 2024, the shake was available on February 5. This year, McDonald’s decided to release it on February 10. Punxsutawney Phil may have declared that we have six more weeks of winter, but McDonald’s said you can enjoy the festive spring milkshake next week.
Ever since the minty shake debuted in 1970, fans have clamored for its seasonal St. Patrick’s Day release. In fact, it wasn’t even available nationwide until 2012, so people used to trawl message boards trying to find nearby franchises that sold the bright green delicacy.
What flavor is a Shamrock Shake?
Technically, the Shamrock Shake is described as “a delicious mint shake.” Sure, it’s in the mint family, but it’s also unlike any other flavor I’ve ever experienced. This fast-food milkshake has a distinct vanilla-tinged sweetness from the soft serve. And maybe my taste buds are fooled by the bright green color, but it tastes like a lighter, spring-y mint as opposed to a darker, wintry mint.
The Shamrock Shake has a polarizing flavor profile, but nothing else compares. No wonder our copycat Shamrock Shake is so popular all year round!
