Meta Implements New Restrictions on Teen Users for More Age-Appropriate Content

Meta announced that it would be implementing new privacy safeguards to better protect teens and minors from harmful online content on both Instagram and Facebook. These content restrictions will be automatically applied to all users under the age of 18, with no option to opt out. However, the company also plans to offer additional privacy settings and resources for teens to help them navigate the platforms more safely.

All teen users’ account settings will automatically enroll in the new protections. Accounts of users 18 and under will be unable to opt out of the content restrictions. Meta will also provide notification prompts for additional privacy settings, and users can choose to enable these recommendations with a single opt-in toggle to further curtail who can interact with their content. The new policy update begins rolling out today and is expected to be fully implemented in the coming months.

The company states the change is being made “in line with expert guidance” and aims to limit exposure to graphic violence, eating disorders, and self-harm. Search results related to these topics will be hidden for teens, with expert resources offered in their place. These resources include contact helplines, the ability to message a friend, and suggestions from professionals outside of Meta.

This announcement comes after Seattle’s public school district filed a lawsuit against major social media companies, arguing that they prioritize profitability over students’ mental wellbeing. Meta’s expansion of content moderation policies appears to be a response to the growing concerns around the impact of social media on teen users’ mental health.
