Microsoft Engineer Raises Concerns About Copilot Designer AI Image Generator
In a surprising turn of events, Shane Jones, an artificial intelligence engineer at Microsoft, was left disturbed by the images produced by the Copilot Designer AI image generator. This tool, unveiled in March 2023, utilizes OpenAI technology to create images based on text prompts entered by users. Encouraging creativity, the AI has been known to generate a wide range of visuals.
Jones, who regularly tests the product for weaknesses, noticed a disturbing trend in the images being generated. Images depicting demons, monsters, controversial social issues, and violent scenarios were among the creations churned out by the AI in the past few months. CNBC recreated some of these scenes using the Copilot tool, formerly known as Bing Image Creator.
The revelations shook Jones to his core, prompting him to raise concerns internally within Microsoft in December. Despite his efforts, the company chose to keep the product active. This led Jones to approach OpenAI directly, but to no avail, which ultimately resulted in him posting an open letter on LinkedIn calling for an investigation into the AI model.
Microsoft’s legal team swiftly responded by requesting Jones to remove his post, setting off a chain of events that saw him reaching out to U.S. senators to address the issue. Unsatisfied with the responses received, Jones has taken the matter to the Federal Trade Commission and Microsoft’s board of directors, seeking further action to ensure the safety of users interacting with Copilot Designer.
Looking ahead, Jones remains committed to advocating for better safeguards and oversight of AI technologies like Copilot Designer. His efforts highlight the importance of ethical considerations in the development and deployment of advanced AI systems, safeguarding against potential misuse and harm in the digital landscape.
