CMA CGM recently added the CMA CGM Monaco, a 7,000 CEU LNG dual-fuel roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) newbuild, to its fleet. This eco-friendly car carrier was constructed at Jinling Shipyard Jiangsu in China and has already docked at Yantai, China on its way to Europe. The vessel is scheduled to arrive in Tilbury, UK by mid-March, marking a significant milestone in automotive transport between Asia and Europe.
With a length of 200 meters and a width of 38 meters, the Malta-flagged CMA CGM Monaco is an innovative addition to CMA CGM’s car carrier fleet. It is equipped with LNG and battery hybrid technology, setting a new standard for emission reduction and providing a sustainable solution for the growing electric vehicle market.
The CMA CGM Monaco, with capacity for 7,000 vehicles spread across twelve decks, is poised to revolutionize China-Europe trade exchanges. In 2023, China became the world’s largest automobile exporter, surpassing Japan. The rise in vehicle trade and the shift towards electric/hybrid vehicles are expected to boost the demand for car carriers in the coming years.
Recently, the CMA CGM Indianapolis, the first of four identical RoRo ships commissioned by CMA CGM, made its first stop in BLG AutoTerminal Bremerhaven, Germany. The remaining vessels from the fleet, the CMA CGM Monza and CMA CGM Silverstone, are set to join the French company’s lineup soon.
In a strategic move last year, CMA CGM merged its car carrier business with La Méridionale, a Marseille-based company specializing in ro-pax cargo and passenger ships. As part of this alliance, the company ordered two LNG-powered RoPax ships for La Méridionale, designed to operate under the French flag with improved environmental performance, resulting in a 50% reduction in CO2 emissions. The integration of these eco-friendly vessels demonstrates CMA CGM’s commitment to sustainability and innovation in maritime transport.
CMA CGM’s Commitment to Sustainable Shipping
Recent developments in the maritime industry showcase CMA CGM’s dedication to sustainable shipping practices. One such initiative is the delivery of CMA CGM Mermaid, the first of a series of ten 2,000 TEU containerships powered by LNG. This marks a significant step towards reducing carbon emissions and promoting eco-friendly solutions within the shipping sector.
Investment in Green Technologies
CMA CGM has allocated over $15 billion towards the construction of a diverse fleet comprising nearly 120 LNG and methanol-powered vessels, scheduled to be completed by 2027. This substantial investment underscores the company’s commitment to adopting cleaner energy sources and reducing its environmental footprint. By embracing alternative fuels, CMA CGM aims to contribute to global efforts of achieving net zero emissions by the year 2050.
Accelerating Decarbonization Efforts
In a bid to expedite the decarbonization of shipping operations, CMA CGM has established a $1.5 billion fund dedicated to advancing sustainable practices within the industry. Through strategic partnerships and innovative solutions, the company seeks to drive positive change and promote the widespread adoption of green technologies.
Collaboration for a Greener Future
Partnering with organizations like Masdar, CMA CGM is actively engaged in forging alliances that prioritize the development and utilization of green maritime fuels. By working together towards a common goal, these entities are paving the way for a more sustainable and environmentally conscious shipping industry.
