The head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers, John Tortorella, has been suspended by the NHL for two games following an incident during a recent game against the Tampa Bay Lightning. The league imposed a $50,000 fine on Tortorella for what they deemed as unprofessional behavior towards the officials.

This altercation occurred in the first period of the game when Tampa Bay took a commanding 4-0 lead within the first 11 minutes. Referee Wes McCauley issued a game misconduct to Tortorella after the fourth goal, resulting in his expulsion from the game. The Flyers coach had been disputing a tripping penalty that led to the Lightning’s power play goal.

Despite being ejected from the game, Tortorella remained on the bench and engaged in a heated exchange with McCauley. It took almost two minutes before he finally left the area and retreated into the tunnel.

The incident took place in Tampa during a ceremony honoring the Lightning’s 2003-04 Stanley Cup-winning team, which Tortorella had coached. Former players from that championship team witnessed the confrontation and found it amusing.

As a consequence of his actions, Tortorella will be absent for the upcoming matches against the San Jose Sharks and the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Philadelphia Flyers are currently positioned in third place in the Metropolitan Division and are fighting for a playoff spot with 17 games left in the season.
