Potential Issue for Digital Gamers
The debate between physical and digital game purchases continues among gamers. Sony caters to both preferences by offering a digital-only version of the PS5. For those who lean towards digital content, a bug poses a threat that could hinder access to most games.
Recently, a Reddit user raised awareness on r/playstation about a significant bug that could potentially block users from playing the majority of their digital game collection. Affected users may notice these games in their transaction history but not in the Purchased menu. If they attempt to download the games, they might face prompts to repurchase or re-add the games from PS+, claiming ownership despite the issues. Games already on the console may show a padlock icon, indicating restrictions.
The bug was triggered by an error message (CE-117773-6) while attempting to launch “Helldivers II.” In an attempt to address the issue, users were advised to select the Restore Licenses option. Unfortunately, this action may have led to disconnecting previous purchases from user accounts, rendering any further attempts futile.
Multiple Users Affected
Reports indicate that over 50 users have encountered this issue, with potential for more cases. Some users shared losing access to hundreds of games after facing the CE-117773-6 error message, highlighting the severity of the bug’s impact.
Seeking Resolution
Initially slow to respond, Sony has begun addressing affected accounts, with promises of restoration within a specified timeframe. Offering a free month of the PS+ subscription as a goodwill gesture to an affected user showcases efforts to compensate for the inconvenience. Those facing the error message are advised to reach out to PlayStation support for prompt assistance and resolution.
