Plot Uncovered: Assassination Threat against Sikh Leader Puts US-India Relations to the Test

India’s relationship with the United States hit a high point when President Joe Biden paid tribute to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a grand state visit in June. The two leaders stood side by side and declared their relationship to be “more dynamic than at any time in history.”

However, this strong alliance could now be put to the test as U.S. prosecutors have accused an Indian official of being involved in a plot to assassinate a well-known Sikh separatist leader residing in New York City.

As the case unfolds in a New York court, it is expected to have a significant impact on the narrative and the consequences for both governments, potentially changing the dynamics of their relationship.

Experts are suggesting that this situation could pose problems and alter the relationship between the two countries going forward.

This is not the first time such an allegation has been made, as Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau previously accused the Indian government of being linked to the killing of a Sikh separatist near Vancouver in June.

The unsealed indictment released on November 29 revealed that U.S. officials had become aware of a plot to kill Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, an American citizen advocating for a sovereign Sikh state. The plot was foiled by U.S. officials who had set up a sting operation to thwart the attempt.

The accused, Nikhil Gupta, an Indian national, now faces charges including murder for hire, although the Indian official involved has not been charged or named. The indictment describes the individual as a “senior field officer” with responsibilities in security management and intelligence.

Both President Biden and Prime Minister Trudeau have raised the issue with Prime Minister Modi, indicating the elevated seriousness of the situation.

The reactions from India have been notably different in the two cases. The response to Canada involved harsh words, with both countries expelling diplomats, while the reaction to the U.S. authorities’ accusations has been more cooperative.

This week, India’s foreign ministry announced that a high-level committee has been set up to investigate the U.S. allegations.
