President Biden delivers hilarious election-themed jokes at lively Gridiron Club Dinner

President Joe Biden made headlines this weekend at the annual Gridiron Club and Foundation Dinner in Washington. During his speech, he humorously pointed out that two candidates had secured their party’s presidential nomination, with one being labeled as too old and mentally unfit for the job – a subtle dig at himself. Despite ongoing criticism about his memory lapses and confusion, Mr. Biden cleverly deflected attention by highlighting instances where his opponent, former President Donald Trump, has also made mistakes.

This marked Mr. Biden’s first appearance at the dinner since taking office. As the 2024 election approaches and talk of a rematch between him and Mr. Trump intensifies, the atmosphere was charged with political banter and camaraderie. The Gridiron Club and Foundation Dinner dates back to 1885, originating when President Grover Cleveland declined to attend. Since then, every president has participated in at least one Gridiron event.

While the tone of the evening was light-hearted, Mr. Biden shifted gears to address the serious threat he believes Mr. Trump poses to democracy. He highlighted concerns about the former president’s baseless claims of election fraud and his cozy relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Emphasizing the vital importance of upholding democracy and resisting authoritarian encroachments, Mr. Biden condemned Mr. Trump’s alleged deference to foreign adversaries.

In a show of solidarity, Mr. Biden invited Ukrainian Ambassador Oksana Markarova and Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas to join him on stage. The president reaffirmed his commitment to standing firm against external threats and not capitulating to foreign pressures. Dressed in traditional white-tie attire, Mr. Biden was accompanied by his daughter Ashley, adding a familial touch to the evening’s festivities.

Among the distinguished guests were Vice President Kamala Harris, her husband Doug Emhoff, multiple Cabinet members, members of Congress, governors, and ambassadors. Irish Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, in town for St. Patrick’s Day, was also in attendance, emphasizing the international flavor of the event. The dinner served as a platform for bipartisan unity, with Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Utah Governor Spencer Cox delivering their respective addresses.

As the evening drew to a close, Mr. Biden underscored the critical role of a free press in upholding democracy. While acknowledging differences with the media at times, he stressed the essential nature of journalism in holding power to account. The president reiterated his commitment to supporting press freedom and mentioned ongoing efforts to secure the release of journalists Evan Gershovich and Austin Tice, one detained in Russia and the other missing in Syria.

The Gridiron Club and Foundation Dinner showcased a blend of humor, political discourse, and camaraderie, reflecting the enduring traditions of American democracy. Amidst the laughter and jest, Mr. Biden’s remarks underscored the gravity of safeguarding democratic values and resisting authoritarian threats in a rapidly evolving global landscape.
