Instagram Reels is currently undergoing internal testing of a new feature called ‘Spins’. This feature would allow users to swap out the audio or text in another user’s video to create their own unique memes.
The discovery of this feature was first made by reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi. According to TechCrunch, Instagram has confirmed the development of the ‘Spins’ feature for Reels. This feature, while currently an internal prototype not yet being tested outside the company, would enable users to switch out the audio or text in existing Reels.
If this feature is rolled out globally, it could potentially pave the way for users to kickstart trends and memes by developing templates that can be easily utilized by others. Creators would receive acknowledgment for their original Reels each time someone creates a Spin, as Instagram mentions that “for every spin added, you will reach their audience.” Screenshots shared by Paluzzi on social media also reveal that users may have the option to disable Spins for specific Reels before sharing them.
It’s worth noting that ‘Spins’ should not be confused with Reels’ current ‘Remix’ feature, which is Instagram’s version of TikTok’s Duets. Remix allows users to appear in a video alongside the original one, providing reactions, comments, or synchronizing movements like dance challenges.
If ‘Spins’ is officially launched, it could offer Instagram Reels – positioned as Instagram’s response to TikTok – an edge by providing a feature that TikTok currently lacks. This could be a significant advancement for Instagram, especially considering that Reels was introduced as a quick solution to TikTok’s dominance in the short-form video realm.
As the ‘Spins’ feature is still in the internal testing phase, it is unclear whether Instagram plans to make it available to the public. However, given the uncertain future of TikTok in the US, this could be an opportune moment for Instagram Reels to impress users with innovative features, such as promoting meme creation, to enhance engagement on the platform.
