Reddit Co-Founder Alexis Ohanian Urges Sale of TikTok Amid Proposed Ban

Reddit Co-founder Shares Views on Potential TikTok Ban

In a recent Instagram post, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian expressed his longstanding concerns regarding the possible ban of TikTok in the United States. Ohanian emphasized that he has been advocating for action on this issue for the past few years, questioning the presence of a Chinese-owned social media platform in America while American companies are barred from operating in China. Rather than advocating for a ban, Ohanian suggested that TikTok should be sold to a different entity, highlighting potential buyers such as Amazon, Walmart, and Meta.

Potential Buyers for TikTok

While Ohanian proposed various potential buyers for TikTok, he specifically emphasized his preference for a non-tech elite individual or company to take control of the platform. According to him, there are numerous interested parties outside the social media tech elite who could prove to be suitable candidates for acquiring TikTok. Ultimately, Ohanian hopes that TikTok will be acquired by a buyer who can positively shape the platform’s future.

Legislative Action on TikTok Ban

Recent legislative developments surrounding TikTok include the bipartisan bill known as the “Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act,” which garnered overwhelming support in the House. The bill, which passed with a 352-65 vote, necessitates that TikTok severs ties with its Chinese owner, ByteDance, within six months or face a ban in the U.S. This legislation is now set to be deliberated in the Senate and, if approved, forwarded to President Joe Biden for signing.

Outlook on the Future of TikTok

As the fate of TikTok hangs in the balance, a TikTok spokesperson conveyed optimism that the Senate would take into account the broader consequences of a potential ban. The spokesperson underscored the significant impact that such an action would have on the economy, small businesses, and the vast number of American users who engage with the platform.

By highlighting the perspectives of key stakeholders and the evolving legislative landscape, the discussion surrounding the potential TikTok ban continues to evolve, eliciting varied viewpoints and considerations.
