Exploring Contrasts in Fall Fashion
Laura and Deanna Fanning took a unique approach for their fall collection by focusing on dichotomies and contrasts. While some may view the all-black ensembles as minimalistic, the designers prefer to describe them as “modular” and creatively crafted.
Prior to the show, Laura and Deanna discussed their vision of exploring the delicate balance between fragility and strength in clothing. They showcased this concept through clever designs such as a black dress with strategically placed cutouts to reveal glimpses of skin. Additionally, inverted pleats and graphic trims added bold contrasts to the coated cotton coats. The collaboration with Levi’s resulted in a denim three-piece suit that exuded a sense of armor-like protection.
One of the standout elements of the collection was the Aran knits, featuring bold pleated shoulders and a mix of chainmail and ribbed textures in striking mustard or red hues. Despite their preference for unconventional color combinations, the designers successfully executed a color-blocking technique that added depth to their pieces. The curvilinear panel dresses, with alternating sheer and opaque sections, are sure to resonate with the brand’s audience. The sailor striped dress and draped “shield” tops also added a sense of modernity to the collection.
Overall, while the collection showcased a diverse range of ideas and concepts, the execution felt somewhat disjointed. The designers may have benefitted from focusing on a select few ideas to create a more cohesive and impactful collection.
