Rediscovering Barbadian Flavors: A Delicious Culinary Journey Home

Heading: A Culinary Journey Back to Barbados: A Taste of Home

After moving to the Cayman Islands from Barbados four years ago, I’ve been longing for the familiar flavors and sensory experiences that I once took for granted.

Cravings for the distinctive taste of flying fish, a cherished national dish, sizzling in a pan, the colorful rum shops along the coastline, the satisfying crunch of a freshly fried fish cake, and the crispy top layer of a macaroni pie have been prevalent since my move.

The culinary landscape of Barbados is a fusion of influences from Africa, England, and India, combined with locally sourced, fresh ingredients. The array of fruits, vegetables, herbs, and spices such as breadfruit, yam, sorrel, thyme, cloves, and cinnamon create a symphony of taste sensations that define Bajan cuisine.

At the peak of my longing for home-cooked meals, an opportunity arose for me and my daughters, Devon and Drew, to travel directly from Grand Cayman to Barbados.

The launch of Cayman Airways flights from Grand Cayman to Barbados coincided perfectly with my children’s mid-term break and the start of the annual Barbados Food and Rum Festival, offering a tantalizing chance to indulge in Bajan delights.

The inaugural flight was not merely a coincidence but a meticulously planned event by the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism, Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc., and Cayman Airways, allowing travelers to get a taste of Bajan cuisine even before boarding the plane.

For my family, this trip back home was a long-awaited opportunity to reconnect with our roots and indulge in the rich culinary heritage of Barbados.

After two years away, my daughters and I were eager to dedicate a week to exploring the vibrant flavors and dishes of our homeland. Armed with food journals and a carefully planned itinerary, we set out on our culinary adventure.

Our journey began with a relaxing stay at the all-inclusive Sugar Bay Hotel, where we immersed ourselves in the local flavors and delicacies that we had missed for so long.

Overall, our trip back to Barbados was a fulfilling and enriching experience, allowing us to savor the flavors of home and create lasting memories with our family.
