Reid Hoffman Backs Sam Altman: OpenAI’s Future is Bright

OpenAI cofounder Reid Hoffman shocked the crowd at WIRED’s LiveWIRED 30th anniversary event in San Francisco with his comments on the recent chaos at OpenAI. Hoffman left OpenAI’s board in March and cofounded the competitor Inflection AI. He was surprised by the decision to fire Sam Altman, the CEO, and supported Altman’s reinstatement, noting that the employees and investors also revolted in support of Altman. Altman eventually got his job back.

During a panel dubbed the “AI Optimist Club,” Hoffman shared his perspectives and expressed his disbelief at the unprecedented events that unfolded at OpenAI. He emphasized that Altman’s reinstatement was history-making, given that nearly all employees had signed a letter demanding it.

Support for Altman from tech leaders is significant as OpenAI tries to move past the crisis. The company is working to balance profit potential and value of AI systems today with the future prospect of systems more intelligent than humans.

Overall, the chaos at OpenAI has brought to the forefront critical discussions about governance, regulation, and the responsible development of AI. As the dust settles, OpenAI will need to reshape its board and mission while addressing potential risks and uncertainties about the future of AI.
