Republicans Ramp Up Efforts to Suppress Youth Voting

In light of recent elections, the Republican party is grappling with challenges on a national, state, and local scale. The 2020 election marked a significant defeat for the party as Donald Trump became the first incumbent president to lose re-election since 1992. The anticipated “red wave” in the 2022 midterm elections did not materialize as Republicans suffered losses at various levels of government.

Young voters continue to be a critical component of the Democratic party’s electoral victories. Democrats maintain a substantial 21-point advantage over Republicans with young voters, as highlighted in a recent analysis. Recognizing this challenge, former Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker acknowledged that “Young people are the problem,” and the GOP must address this issue to secure future victories.

However, the Republican party has not made significant strides in appealing to young voters. Despite holding the majority in the House, the GOP has failed to address the specific concerns of young people, such as gun violence, climate change, and student loans. Instead, the party has resorted to tactics aimed at suppressing the youth vote, reflecting a broader anti-democracy approach.

Voter suppression has been a recurrent strategy for the GOP, particularly targeting racial and ethnic minorities. This includes tactics like gerrymandering, imposing stricter voter ID requirements, and limiting early voting options. As young voter turnout continues to increase, Republicans are intensifying efforts to disenfranchise young voters in the upcoming 2024 elections.

One alarming example of the GOP’s commitment to voter suppression comes from conservative lawyer Cleta Mitchell, who outlined a detailed plan to establish “election integrity task forces” to make voting more difficult for young people. This plan is now being reflected in legislation across numerous states, with at least 15 states introducing or enacting laws that restrict students’ ability to use their college IDs to vote.

It is clear that Republicans are willing to go to great lengths to maintain power, as evidenced by their relentless attacks on voting rights. Despite the resistance they face, the GOP shows no signs of backing down from these aggressive tactics, recognizing the pivotal role of voter turnout in determining election outcomes.
