Ukraine’s Expansion of Attacks on Russian Territory Urges for Urgent Peacemaking

A recent shelling of a market center in Donetsk by Ukrainian forces has resulted in at least 27 people being killed, including multiple children. This gruesome sight is becoming more and more common in the ongoing war, reflecting the horrific nature of the conflict.
Unfortunately, this pattern indicates the potential for increased future civilian casualties in Russia and the eastern oblasts of Ukraine, which Moscow has annexed.
While not justifying the civilian casualties from Russian strikes, it suggests that this trend by Ukraine is likely to worsen as the war continues.
The shelling comes less than a month after a missile attack on Belgorod, Russia, that resulted in over 20 people being killed and more than 130 injured. The victims were all civilians shopping for the New Year holiday.
Belgorod has been shelled daily since the initial attack and was launched after Russia unleashed the war’s largest salvo of munitions one day earlier on December 29.
Ukraine is reported to have used cluster munitions in the Belgorod attack, which is concerning given the increased likelihood of such Western-supplied weaponry being used as the war drags on.
