Photographing the Elusive Snow Leopard
Photographer Morup Namgail embarked on a mission to capture a groundbreaking image – a snow leopard under a starry sky – to bring attention to the endangered landscape and wildlife in Ladakh, India.

Looking for a ghost takes a special kind of patience. The same can be said for tracking snow leopards. Morup Namgail knows this all too well. He spent months striving to capture an image that no one had ever taken before in his home village of Uley, a remote region in Ladakh. His goal was to draw attention to the beauty of the area and the importance of protecting its wildlife.
His journey was not without hardship. Tragically, Morup lost his brother Stanzin to a heart condition during the project. Despite the devastating loss, Morup continued on alone, determined to realize their shared dream.
Last August, on a scorching summer day, Morup finally achieved his goal. He reached a 4900-metre ridge and captured the breathtaking image he had worked so hard to achieve. Although bittersweet, Morup remains hopeful that the stunning image will inspire change and preservation efforts for the snow leopards and the Ladakh region.
