Speed up Your Travel: Everything You Need to Know About U.S. Expedited Programs

Navigating United States airports efficiently during peak travel seasons like spring break and summer vacations can be a hassle. However, there are several services available that can help travelers breeze through immigration and security screenings. These fast-track programs include PreCheck, Global Entry, SENTRI, NEXUS, and CLEAR Plus.

PreCheck is ideal for low-risk travelers who want to skip regular TSA screenings, while Global Entry expedites customs checks for those arriving in the U.S. SENTRI is designed to streamline overland border crossings, and NEXUS facilitates passage between the U.S. and Canada. On the other hand, CLEAR Plus focuses on expediting airport departures by using biometrics for faster passenger identification.

It’s important to note that these services are exclusive to U.S. nationals or lawful U.S. permanent residents, with the exception of Global Entry, which can be used by nationals of 14 other countries.

Recent trends in fast-track programs:

In the past year, there has been a significant increase in enrollments for TSA PreCheck as the U.S. authorities introduced new technologies to combat long waiting times at airport security checkpoints. In 2023, a record-breaking four million members joined PreCheck, marking a 19% increase from the previous year.

Despite the growing number of users, the wait times have also increased. Recent statistics from the TSA show that only 88% of PreCheck passengers waited less than five minutes to clear security in 2023, down from 94% in 2022. This decrease in efficiency could potentially lead to a decline in membership, according to aviation security expert Sheldon Jacobson.

To address these concerns, the TSA has been implementing new technologies like facial recognition and self-service security screenings to streamline the PreCheck process. The Touchless Identity Solution allows PreCheck members to verify their identity using facial recognition technology instead of presenting physical ID or boarding passes. This system is currently in operation at six U.S. airports, with more planned for implementation in 2024.

Furthermore, the TSA has introduced a self-service screening system at Las Vegas’ Harry Reid International Airport. This system enables Trusted Traveler Program members to scan their ID and carry-on bags independently, potentially reducing wait times and improving overall efficiency.

Key information about the major fast-track programs:

TSA PreCheck offers express security lane access at U.S. airports, eliminating the need to remove shoes, belts, laptops, jackets, and liquids under 3.4 ounces (100 ml).
