A major update was released for Meta’s social network Threads on Thursday, as the company began rolling out tags (without the hash symbol) on the platform. Users are now able to tag only one topic per post to avoid tag spam.
Testing of the tag feature began in Australia last month, and the feature is now rolling out to users worldwide.
Unlike hashtags, users can use a phrase with spaces in it, as well as special characters. Users can click on a tag in a post to open all posts related to that tag in the search view.
To look at all posts with a specific tag, users can simply type the tag in the search bar. However, some posts with that phrase may not use tags. If users choose to add hashtags to a post, they will need to do so manually in the composer.
In a post, Instagram head Adam Mosseri expressed the hope that this design will lead to less engagement hacking.
Notably, the Threads app does not currently have a trending section. However, users may see popular tags that they can easily add when tapping on the tag button.
Users have the ability to report a topic if they find it insensitive. Reporting categories include spam, bullying or harassment, scam or fraud, eating disorders, and hate speech and symbols. Some users said that they received warnings about sensitive tags that were previously reported. It is unclear what the threshold is for when Threads turns on the pop-up for sensitive tags.
There is also an issue with similar hashtags being populated. With the one tag per post limit, posts may not reach the intended audience searching for another tag. For example, there are currently multiple tags for NBA including NBAThread, NBA THreads, and NBA.
Last month, Threads expanded its search feature to include “all languages” in all countries where the app is available. The company is also reportedly set to launch Threads in the EU in compliance with the region’s regulations.
Earlier this month, app analytics firm Apptopia reported that Threads’ daily downloads recovered from a recent dip.
