Wow, what happened to Connecticut’s women’s college basketball team? When the Associated Press released its rankings, UConn was at 17. Yep, you read that right. Once a powerhouse, now struggling to keep up. But why?

Well, let’s start with their star player, Paige Bueckers, who missed a lot of playing time due to knee injuries. And then, just when they thought it couldn’t get worse, guard Azzi Fudd goes down with a season-ending injury. Ouch! And it’s not just them, a total of four Huskies have been sidelined since the summer, and without them, the team has struggled to find their footing with a 4-3 start. The only silver lining? Their losses were against all highly-ranked teams who are now in the top five. Small consolation, right?

But guess what? It’s been decades since UConn started a season with three losses. The last time was way back in 1980. Are they on a downward spiral? Will they even be ranked in the AP poll soon? The head coach, Geno Auriemma, says this year has been tough, way tougher than they expected. This is the team known for their unprecedented success with 11 national championships. They are not used to this.”

In a nutshell, UConn has set a standard so high that it’s hard to imagine them struggling in any way. Whether or not they rise back to the top, one thing remains clear: UConn’s legacy in women’s basketball is unlike anything else in American sport.
