UN Chief Raises Alarm Over Gaza’s Humanitarian Crisis

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has invoked a rare article of the group’s charter to sound the alarm over the unending atrocities in Gaza and the threat of humanitarian collapse for Palestinians in the region.

In a letter released Wednesday, Guterres warned the Security Council of the “appalling human suffering, physical destruction and collective trauma” in Israel and Gaza. He urged UNSC members to call for a permanent cease-fire in the region.

Guterres highlighted the collapsing health care system in Gaza and the dire conditions, stating that “nowhere is safe in Gaza.” He used Article 99 of the U.N. Charter, an unprecedented move that signifies the urgency of the situation.

Israel’s decadeslong violence against Gaza has resulted in thousands of deaths and mass displacement, while Israel continues to escalate its offensive. Guterres warned that the humanitarian crisis in Gaza could have “potentially irreversible implications” for the Palestinian population.
