Unlocking Secrets: AI Deciphers 2,000 New Characters from Ancient Greek Scroll

Decoding ancient papyrus scrolls from the 1st century CE that were damaged during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE is a challenging task that has been accomplished by the winners of the Vesuvius Challenge using computer vision and AI machine learning programs. These scrolls have been inaccessible for a long time due to their fragile and charred condition, but thanks to the innovative work of Luke Farritor, Youssef Nader, and Julian Schilliger, who split the $700,000 grand prize, the Greek texts comprising 2,000 characters across 15 columns have been deciphered.

In a remarkable feat, 21-year-old Luke Farritor, a native of Nebraska and former SpaceX intern, won the challenge’s “First Word” contest by unveiling the word Πορφύραc, meaning “purple” in ancient Greek. With the help of Nader and Schilliger, they delved into the rest of the fragments using their AI programs to reveal an ancient philosopher’s thoughts on life’s pleasures and criticism of those who fail to appreciate them.

The scrolls were originally housed in a villa library linked to Julius Caesar’s father-in-law in Herculaneum, near Pompeii, where they were engulfed by the volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Rediscovered in 1752, the scrolls have remained a mystery for centuries. The launch of the Vesuvius Challenge in 2023 aimed to unlock the hidden contents using cutting-edge technology after years of preservation efforts by scholars.

Releasing open-source software and 3D X-ray scans of the papyrus fragments and scrolls, researchers made significant progress in revealing the contents of the scrolls. The recovered text, believed to be authored by the Epicurean philosopher Philodemus, focuses on topics such as music, food, and the art of enjoying life’s pleasures. One example from the scroll debates whether the abundance of food affects the pleasure derived from meals, with the author arguing that scarcity does not necessarily equate to greater pleasure.

The AI-empowered researchers have made remarkable progress in deciphering these ancient scrolls, shedding light on the wisdom and philosophical musings of past civilizations. Through their innovative methods and dedication, they have unearthed valuable insights that enrich our understanding of ancient Greek culture and thought.
