Although considered the underdog in what will be the last of the four-team College Football Playoff, Washington is a battle-tested, undefeated team who will face off against Texas in the Sugar Bowl on New Year’s Day. The Huskies, representing the Pac-12 conference (RIP), are loaded with offensive talent lead by head coach Kalen DeBoer. Max Vrooman, the site manager at UW Dawg Pound, breaks down four reasons why you might want to consider Washington to be the next team to the lift up the trophy.
1. Offense
Washington has a remarkable offense. Michael Penix Jr. led all power conference quarterbacks in passing yards for each of the past two seasons and finished in second place for the Heisman Trophy this year.
The Huskies have an incredible team in every spot along the offense, as you don’t get to be a top-five offense in the country just by having a great quarterback.
The receiver corps, led by Biletnikoff award finalist Rome Odunze, is to be commended for its performance since it finished second in the country with 1,428 receiving yards. The ”Penix to Odunze back shoulder fade” was among the most deadly plays in college football this season. The team is even better with Ja’Lynn Polk and Jalen McMillan — each of whom has reached 1,000 receiving yards in one of the last two seasons – on the roster.
Running back Dillon Johnson has proved doubters wrong. Over Washington’s final six games against teams that finished with a winning record, Johnson ran for 792 yards with 10 touchdowns, reaching over 1,100 yards on the season despite being a non-factor in the team’s first two games due to an injury.
Washington’s offensive line, unmatched and winners of the Joe Moore award, which is given to the most outstanding O-line unit in college football, emphasized its ability by giving up the second fewest sacks in the country this year. This powerful group comes together to present an offense that is fifth in rushing success rate and sixth in passing success rate.
