White House Working on New Plan to Release American Journalist Held in Russia

washington —

The White House is working hard to secure the release of journalist Evan Gershkovich and another jailed American from Russia, according to National Security Council spokesman John Kirby. The Kremlin rejected a previous proposal, but efforts are ongoing to secure their release.

Reporter Gershkovich has been imprisoned since March on espionage charges that he, his employer, and the U.S. government deny. The imprisonment highlights Moscow’s crackdown on press freedom, experts say.

The other American is Paul Whelan, a former U.S. Marine who was arrested in Moscow in 2018 and is currently serving a 16-year sentence on spying charges that he and the U.S. government deny. The White House announced its continued efforts to secure their release, following Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s statement that the administration is actively working on it.

Last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed interest in reaching an agreement with the U.S. on the release of Gershkovich and Whelan. The White House said it will continue to prioritize the release of detained Americans, reaffirming its commitment to bringing them home as soon as possible. Additionally, the Poynter Institute has named Gershkovich its Media Person of the Year, recognizing his dedication to journalism and the dangers that journalists face worldwide.
