Yankees Fans on Edge: Gerrit Cole to Miss 10-12 Weeks with Elbow Issue

Highly regarded New York Yankees pitcher and reigning AL Cy Young winner, Gerrit Cole, is facing a setback as he is expected to be sidelined for a minimum of 4-6 weeks due to an elbow injury, as confirmed by CBS Sports HQ’s Jim Bowden on Wednesday. Cole underwent MRI, CT scan, and X-rays, leading to concerns that prompted renowned surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache to request an in-person evaluation in Los Angeles on Thursday. Yankees manager Aaron Boone refrained from providing a specific timeline for Cole’s return to the pitching mound.

Coming out of the consultation, reports from the New York Post suggest that Cole received some positive news during his appointment with the expert surgeon. It is believed that Cole may be able to bypass Tommy John surgery and instead opt for a regimen of rest, rehabilitation, and non-surgical treatments for his recovery.

As per a timeline reported by, the anticipated absence of Cole could span 10-12 weeks, emphasizing the significance of his absence from the Yankees’ starting rotation.

Boone had previously noted concerns about Cole’s recovery patterns in between pitching appearances, which were initially spurred by his performance in early March. Cole’s recent limited showings in spring games and simulated outings have raised red flags about his physical condition and readiness for the upcoming season.

The potential loss of Cole for an extended period comes as a significant setback for the Yankees, who are striving to bounce back from a lackluster 2023 season where they finished with an 82-80 record, the franchise’s poorest performance in thirty years. Cole’s absence not only impacts the team’s on-field excellence but also underscores his historical durability and reliability as a top-tier player.

In a bid to bolster their pitching staff, the Yankees made significant offseason moves by acquiring Juan Soto in a trade that involved four pitchers, including Michael King, Jhony Brito, and Randy Vásquez. With Cole facing a possible extended absence, the rotation lineup now features:

  1. RHP Gerrit Cole (potentially sidelined for two months)
  2. LHP Carlos Rodón (struggled with injuries and ineffectiveness in 2023)
  3. RHP Marcus Stroman
  4. LHP Nestor Cortes (hampered by injuries and ineffectiveness in 2023)
  5. RHP Clarke Schmidt (achieved a significant innings milestone in 2023)
  6. RHP Luke Weaver
  7. RHP Will Warren (not part of the 40-man roster)

An extended absence for Cole could prompt the Yankees to explore the free agent market for additional pitching options. Noteworthy names like reigning NL Cy Young winner Blake Snell and former Yankee Jordan Montgomery are currently unsigned free agents, presenting potential opportunities for the Yankees to strengthen their rotation, regardless of Cole’s availability. The prospect of engaging agent Scott Boras, who represents both Cole and Montgomery, adds an interesting dimension to the team’s future pitching decisions.
