Prepare for Fireworks: Joshua Views Bout with Ngannou as His Shot at Redemption
Losing two bouts to Oleksandr Usyk may have left Anthony Joshua without any belts, but he’s gearing up to prove he’s still the best in his division. Although his upcoming fight with Francis Ngannou won’t be an official title match, Joshua sees it as his chance to reclaim his status as a boxing champion.
Defeating Ngannou could propel Joshua back into title contention, but for now, he’s solely focused on facing Ngannou with the mentality of an undisputed title fight.
During a recent interview on The MMA Hour, Joshua emphasized, “Ngannou is my undisputed fight. Because you’re only as good as your last fight, and I respect him a lot. He ain’t easy money. He’s a hard night’s work. And you know what’s crazy? So am I. I’m a hard night’s work for anyone. So let’s go, it’s going to be fireworks.”
The odds may be stacked in Joshua’s favor in terms of boxing experience, but he’s not underestimating Ngannou, acknowledging that both of them are in for a challenging battle. With an impressive record of 27-3, Joshua has proven himself as one of the best in the sport, despite his setbacks against Usyk and Andy Ruiz Jr., whom he later defeated to reclaim his status.
Initially projected to fight Deontay Wilder in 2024, Joshua had to reconsider his options after Wilder’s loss to Joseph Parker and ultimately chose Ngannou as his next opponent.
Reflecting on his decision, Joshua admitted, “I thought it might be Wilder still, because the contracts were signed, and it’s still a big fight. So no, I kind of let that one slide for, and then they put Francis there, and my team were like, ‘This is a good opportunity on this day in Saudi Arabia against this opponent. What are you saying?’ I said, ‘Let’s roll. Let’s go.’”
Joshua made it clear that he has immense respect for Ngannou’s boxing skills, citing Ngannou’s impressive pro boxing debut last October. Now, with both fighters locked in, expectations are running high for a headlining fight that promises to deliver an explosive clash.
