A peaceful journey through India turned into a horrific ordeal for a popular influencer couple who were savagely assaulted by a group of attackers who reportedly took turns assaulting the woman, local authorities revealed over the weekend.
Fernanda and Vicente, known for sharing their global motorcycle adventures with over 140,000 Instagram followers, were passing through the Dumka district in India en route to Nepal when they fell victim to a brutal attack. They had made a stop in Dumka to camp overnight in a tent, as reported by various sources.
In Instagram videos, the couple displayed visible injuries on their faces and became emotional as they narrated in Spanish the harrowing incident they experienced.
“We went through something that nobody should ever go through,” Fernanda shared in the video. “Seven men raped me, assaulted us, and robbed us.” She mentioned that the attackers were not interested in stealing belongings, but rather focused on committing sexual assault.
Reports indicated that Fernanda managed to reach a police van around 11 p.m. and was transported to a hospital for medical attention. Pitamber Singh Kherwar, the district’s police superintendent, confirmed the arrest of three individuals related to the assault and mentioned ongoing efforts to apprehend additional suspects.
Vicente later posted another video revealing his injuries, including a damaged lip and multiple stitches around his mouth. “My injuries are extensive, but Fernanda suffered more,” he expressed, detailing how the assailants repeatedly struck him with a helmet and a rock.
This disturbing incident shed light on India’s alarming prevalence of sexual violence. The nation has garnered a reputation as one of the most dangerous places for women, with close to 90 reported rape cases daily in 2022, according to the National Crime Records Bureau. However, many incidents likely go unreported due to victim-blaming and skepticism regarding legal justice.
As of the latest updates from Fernanda and Vicente, they remained hospitalized under police protection. The investigation is ongoing as authorities pursue justice for the couple.
