Norway’s King Harald Receives Pacemaker in Malaysia
A plane thought to be transporting Norway’s King Harald departed Malaysia after he underwent surgery to implant a pacemaker. The 87-year-old monarch was hospitalized in Langkawi while on a private vacation for an infection, according to the royal house.
Medical Procedure in Malaysia
The surgery took place at Sultanah Maliha Hospital to address a low heart rate. King Harald traveled to Malaysia with his wife, Queen Sonja, to celebrate his birthday. A Scandinavian Airlines medical evacuation plane, used for medical emergencies, flew from Oslo to Langkawi to transport the royal couple.
Health Challenges
In recent years, King Harald has faced health issues, including previous hospitalizations. He received a heart valve replacement in 2020 and has been using crutches. Despite his health struggles, he has expressed no intention to abdicate the throne.
Royal Succession
While the King recuperates, Crown Prince Haakon has taken on his father’s responsibilities. King Harald’s role in Norway is ceremonial, with no political authority. He became king in 1991 after his father’s passing and is known for his humble beginnings and compassionate leadership.
Historic Symbolism
As Norway’s first native-born king in centuries, King Harald’s marriage to a commoner endeared him to the public. His solidarity with the nation during times of tragedy, such as the 2011 massacre by Anders Behring Breivik, further solidified his place in the hearts of Norwegians.
