France Passes Historic Law to Enshrine Abortion Rights in Constitution
In a groundbreaking move, France made history by becoming the first country worldwide to establish abortion as a constitutional right. This monumental decision came about through a resounding 780-72 vote among French lawmakers, as they sought inspiration from the recent reversal of Roe vs. Wade in the United States.
The new law grants women an essential “guaranteed freedom” to make the choice of whether abortion is the best decision for them. This constitutional amendment garnered support from the required three-fifths majority of the 925 National Assembly and Senate members, signifying a significant step forward in women’s reproductive rights. The extraordinary session took place at the Palace of Versailles near Paris and received overwhelming public backing.
Prime Minister Gabriel Attal addressed the audience, emphasizing the moral obligation owed to women who had faced the hardships of illegal abortions in the past. The final approval of the constitutional change was met with a symbolic gesture as the Eiffel Tower in Paris was illuminated with the message “my body my choice,” echoing the sentiments of women’s autonomy and empowerment.
The decision to solidify abortion rights in the French constitution stemmed from the necessity to safeguard these rights following the rollback of abortion protections in the United States. With the U.S. Supreme Court’s overturning of the landmark Roe ruling, the urgency to protect women’s access to abortion became paramount. Consequently, France took a proactive stance by enacting this constitutional amendment to prevent any regression in women’s reproductive rights.
President Emmanuel Macron, a staunch advocate for reproductive rights, pledged to enshrine abortion rights as a testament to his unwavering support for women’s choices. This bold move not only represents a victory for reproductive justice but also serves as a decisive stand against the rising tide of far-right ideologies in France and across Europe.
The ceremonial finalization of the amendment is scheduled to take place on International Women’s Day, underscoring the significance of this historic moment in the ongoing fight for women’s rights. This legislative milestone marks a turning point in the global landscape, signaling a new era of hope and progress for women’s autonomy and reproductive freedom.
