IATSE Local 798 and Reel Works Join Forces for Exclusive Makeup Artist Training Program

IATSE Local 798, a union representing film, TV, theater, and commercials makeup artists and hair stylists, is joining forces with the Brooklyn-based media and workforce development organization Reel Works to introduce an exciting new training program.

Thanks to the support of Netflix, AMC Networks, and the Consortium for Worker Education, the IATSE Entertainment Industry Makeup Artist Training program is set to equip makeup professionals from underrepresented communities in New York City with the necessary skills to thrive in theater, TV, and film. This program also prepares them for a range of opportunities within the entertainment industry. This initiative builds on a previous hairstylist training and is the third time the two organizations have collaborated on a project.

John Williams, Reel Works Co-Founder, and Executive Director, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership with IATSE Local 798. He highlighted their collective efforts to provide quality training and mentorship to individuals from diverse backgrounds, accelerating their careers and enhancing diversity and inclusion in the industry.

The inaugural cohort of the program consists of twelve participants. The training, which took place between July and November, was held at the IATSE Local 798 Union Hall and The Compleat Sculptor and featured prominent industry professionals.

Jenn Bullock, Local 798 vice president and New York director of education, emphasized the importance of the program in introducing students to the opportunities available in the entertainment industry. The program aims to provide students with the knowledge and confidence to excel in their craft.

Throughout the training, student makeup artists participated in various classes, covering topics such as aging, airbrushing, and the history of African American makeup. Additionally, trainees received makeup kits, which included contributions from top industry brands, to prepare them for real-world work experiences.

Upon completion of the training, students will have the opportunity to engage in one-on-one mentorship and work readiness classes, further guiding them as they pursue their careers in the entertainment industry.
