More than two years after the California Civil Rights Department (CRD) filed a high-profile lawsuit against Activision Blizzard, accusing the company of widespread gender discrimination and pay inequality, the two parties have reached a settlement for approximately $54 million.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the CRD published a statement on its website shortly after the settlement was reported. Under the agreement, Activision Blizzard will take steps to ensure fair pay and promotion practices and provide monetary relief to affected women.
The lawsuit, filed under the previous title of the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing, accused Activision Blizzard of violating California laws and fostering a discriminatory work culture. Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard was partially influenced by these events.
Controversial CEO Bobby Kotick will remain at the helm until the end of 2023, after which a new CEO will be appointed. The settlement marks a significant victory for women in the industry and underscores the need for workplace equality.
