Alibaba Group’s Lingxi Game Set for Leadership Shake-Up as Young Executives Take Charge

Alibaba Group’s subsidiary Lingxi Games is preparing for a notable leadership transformation. An internal communication revealed that the current management team will be stepping aside to make way for younger executives to assume the reins.

Moving Away from Traditional Methods
Alibaba is keen on nurturing a startup mindset and fostering innovation by incorporating the skills of younger talents born after 1985 into its leadership. This strategy aims to prevent the company from becoming stagnant in outdated practices.

Amidst a broader organizational overhaul at Alibaba, the company has shifted to a holding company management structure and segmented its operations into six key units.

Zhan Zhonghui, the current head of Lingxi Games, disclosed the upcoming changes through a company-wide email. Alongside two other executives, Zhonghui will be relinquishing their positions by the end of March. In his place, it is reported that Zhuo Bingshu, a talented game producer in his mid-30s, will take the helm at Lingxi Games.

Zhonghui, around 50 years old, founded Guangzhou Ejoy in 2011 and later became its CEO. Following Alibaba’s acquisition of Ejoy in 2017, the company was rebranded as Lingxi Games. One of Lingxi Games’ notable successes is the mobile game Three Kingdom Tactics, developed by Zhou.

Three Kingdom Tactics, a game that enables players to compete in building empires, saw rapid acclaim and success. Within two years of its launch, the game generated over $1 billion in revenue, as reported by SensorTower.

Embracing Change with New Leadership
The forthcoming transition signifies a fresh chapter for Lingxi Games, with younger leaders charting the future course of the gaming division.

Not Just Alibaba – Other Major Players Reshaping Leadership
Alibaba’s gaming segment is not the sole department undergoing a leadership shift; its domestic e-commerce, local services, and cloud services divisions have also witnessed changes at the helm over the past year.

Similarly, several other renowned companies have implemented similar restructuring strategies to adapt effectively to the changing business landscape. Google, Microsoft, Domino’s Pizza, IBM, and Amazon are among those that have recently undergone significant changes in their leadership.

For instance, Google reorganized its operations by establishing Alphabet, a new holding company, to boost focus and efficiency by splitting the company into distinct entities. Under the leadership of Satya Nadella, Microsoft embarked on a restructuring phase in 2013 to address internal hurdles and foster innovation across the organization.

In January 2024, Amazon also experienced leadership adjustments, with John Felton transitioning from SVP of Worldwide Operations to AWS, the company’s tech solutions arm. Udit Madan assumed Felton’s former role, bringing over 15 years of experience at Amazon and overseeing the company’s global delivery services.

Likewise, Domino’s Pizza successfully implemented change management strategies to navigate challenges and propel growth, demonstrating the ongoing trend of major corporations adapting to the evolving business landscape.
