The Challenges of Space Travel on Astronauts’ Health
Space travel poses significant challenges to astronauts’ physical health, impacting various bodily functions. These challenges include potential disruptions to the immune system, increased red blood cell death, bone loss, and an increase in headaches. A recent study published in the journal Neurology shed light on these health issues faced by astronauts during their missions.
Effects on Physical Health
Gravity changes during space flight can affect various bodily functions, including the brain. According to W. P. J. van Oosterhout, a neurologist at Leiden University Medical Center, the vestibular system, responsible for balance and posture, has to adapt to the conflicting signals it receives in the absence of normal gravity. This adaptation process can lead to various health issues, including headaches.
Study Details
The study analyzed data from 24 astronauts from NASA, ESA, and JAXA who participated in International Space Station expeditions from November 2011 to June 2018. These astronauts spent a total of 3,596 days in space. Before their space flight, astronauts completed health screenings and reported their headache history. During their mission, they filled out questionnaires to track any headaches experienced.
Headache Incidence in Space
The study revealed that 92 percent of astronauts experienced headaches during space flight, a significant increase compared to the 38 percent who reported headaches before the mission. Additionally, most headaches reported were tension headaches, with a smaller percentage likely being migraines. These headaches were more intense during the first week in space, possibly due to adjustments in the brain’s balance system and zero gravity conditions.
Space Motion Sickness
According to van Oosterhout, the changes in the brain’s balance system, combined with adapting to zero gravity during the initial phase of space flight, can lead to space motion sickness, with headaches being a common symptom. Headaches can also occur later in the mission and may be linked to increased pressure within the skull.
In conclusion, space travel presents various health challenges for astronauts, including an increased incidence of headaches. Understanding these challenges is crucial for ensuring the well-being of astronauts during long-duration space missions.
