In a fiery speech delivered on the eve of the third anniversary of the January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol, President Joe Biden denounced his likely presidential election opponent, Donald Trump, in the strongest terms yet, painting Trump as the driving force behind the assault on democracy.
“Trump’s attack on democracy isn’t just in the past,” Biden passionately declared during his speech near historic Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, “It’s what he’s promising for the future.”
He recounted in astonishing detail the shocking events of January 6 – the shattering of doors, assaults on Capitol Police officers, the gallows, chants to hang Mike Pence, rioters asking for Nancy Pelosi, and Trump’s refusal to condemn the violence.
The president also released an ad filled with clips of Trump’s comments in the wake of January 6, where Trump described the attack as “the most beautiful day” and the attackers as having “love in their heart.”
Biden warned that Republicans have become more sympathetic to Capitol rioters and more likely to absolve Trump of responsibility after January 6. “As time has gone on, politics, fear, money, all have intervened,” Biden said.
He also recalled the low moments of Trump’s presidency, including reported comments calling dead soldiers “suckers” and “losers” and Trump’s violent rhetoric on the campaign trail, where he promised “revenge” and even to enact a “dictatorship” if re-elected.
Meanwhile, at a campaign rally in Sioux Center, Iowa, Trump mocked Biden’s speech, calling it “pathetic fear-mongering” and accusing Biden of failing and betraying hardworking Americans.
