If you thought Hollywood was a bit quieter this week, it’s because all the action was in Palm Springs. That’s where the stars of 2024’s potential Oscar-winning films, like Leonardo DiCaprio, Emma Stone, and Margot Robbie, were seen at the opening of this year’s festival-2024/films/what-to-watch?” href=”https://www.psfilmfest.org/film-festival-2024/films/what-to-watch?” rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank”>Palm Springs International Film Festival. Surprisingly, the festival kicks off with a star-studded evening of awards rather than ending with it.
According to its website, the 35-year-old festival is known as “the first stop on the road to the Academy Awards.” While it usually coincides with the Academy’s nomination voting window, this year, the voting begins on January 11, giving the Oscar hopefuls a long campaign trail. Despite this, some, like DiCaprio, seem ready to call it a day already.
DiCaprio was present to support Killers of the Flower Moon, which received the festival’s Vanguard Award. Other winners included Stone for Poor Things, Cillian Murphy for Oppenheimer, Da’Vine Joy Randolph for The Holdovers, and Carey Mulligan for Maestro.
