New Zealander Braden Currie Poised for Another IRONMAN New Zealand Victory
Braden Currie, a renowned figure in New Zealand triathlon circles, is on the verge of claiming his third title at IRONMAN New Zealand in Taupo this coming weekend.
The 37-year-old athlete previously triumphed in 2017 and 2021, also securing podium finishes in two third-place and one second-place spot last year, narrowly missing out to Mike Phillips.
Taking aim at the new IRONMAN Pro Series this season, Currie acknowledged that while the Taupo race does not contribute to points, the allure of competing on home soil was too irresistible to forego.
Reflecting on his debut at the full-distance event in 2017, Currie expressed his delight in participating and hinted at potential future races, indicating a possible involvement in four or even five IRONMAN events this year.
Eager to secure a spot at the prestigious Kona World Championship, Currie emphasized that while another title win is a key goal, the ultimate objective remains clinching a Kona qualification, underscoring the significance of this weekend’s race in fulfilling that ambition.
With preparations going smoothly, Currie anticipates a tough yet thrilling competition at the 40th anniversary of IRONMAN New Zealand, highlighting the presence of formidable international competitors and the element of unpredictability adding to the excitement.
Amidst the formidable field awaiting him, Currie remains steadfast in his race strategy, banking on his tried-and-tested swim-bike prowess coupled with a rapid run leg as the winning formula.
