The ECOFED Project: Transforming European Cloud Services
As part of the Project of Common European Interest – Cloud Infrastructure and Services (IPCEI-CIS) programme, the ECOFED project has secured co-funding from the Dutch government for the period of 2024 to 2027.
Collaborative Innovation in Cloud Solutions
Over 100 companies and knowledge institutes from 12 EU countries are coming together to collaborate on the development of cutting-edge data and cloud solutions. These solutions will cater to industrial companies and key sectors such as hydrogen and processors.
Investing in European Cloud Infrastructure
With the approval of the EC, a substantial €2.6bn investment has been earmarked for the creation of an open, decentralized, and accessible European cloud infrastructure. This investment is a joint effort involving public funding from member states and significant private investment from participating entities.
Public-Private Investment Collaboration
The IPCEI-CIS programme boasts a total public-private investment of €4bn, with the Dutch government leading the charge with three projects amounting to €70m euros. These initiatives focus on fostering data-driven business models and enhancing the sustainability of cloud infrastructure.
Prioritizing Sustainability in Cloud Services
The Moduler Integrated Sustainable Datacenter (MISD) project is dedicated to reducing CO2 emissions from data centers by more than 50%. This initiative exemplifies the commitment to creating environmentally friendly cloud solutions.
Empowering European Cloud Federation
ECOFED represents a visionary approach to cloud federation, paving the way for a robust digital infrastructure in the future. By emphasizing interoperability and market openness, the project aims to provide customers with the flexibility to select and switch between different cloud service providers.
Enhancing Europe’s Strategic Autonomy
To lessen dependence on major hyperscale cloud providers like Microsoft and Amazon, Europe must cultivate a robust digital infrastructure within its borders. ECOFED’s mission aligns with the goal of promoting data sovereignty and cloud portability at the European level.
Paving the Way for a Decentralised Cloud Ecosystem
European funding support signifies a significant milestone in the journey towards a decentralised, open, and federated cloud system. By leveraging innovative technologies, upcoming EU legislation, and equitable market practices, the project holds the promise of reshaping the cloud landscape within the region.
