The Brazilian set a blistering pace of 1m35.217s around Daytona International Speedway’s 3.56-mile road course circuit for Action Express.
Connor De Phillippi put the BMW M Hybrid V8 ahead for most of the session before being overtaken by Derani. In the end, De Phillippi finished second, trailing by 0.377s. Derani’s exceptional performance in the opening sector at 22.991s gave him the edge.
After Nick Tandy led the opening session, his co-driver Laurens Vanthoor secured the No. 6 Porsche Penske 963 in third place, 0.504s behind the leader.
Jordan Taylor had an eventful time, spinning the No. 40 Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti Acura ARX-06 in Turn 1 with 30 minutes remaining, but still managing to finish seventh overall.
Indy NXT champion, Christian Rasmussen, topped the LMP2 class with a lap of 1m39.674s in the No. 18 Era Motorsport ORECA.
Nolan Siegel, one of Rasmussen’s rivals in the Indy NXT, finished 0.253s behind in the Sean Creech Motorsport Ligier.
Two incidents involving LMP2 entries occured, first with the No. 88 AF Corse ORECA spinning in Turn 3 but managing to finish third, and then the No. 8 Tower Motorsports ORECA spinning in Turn 7, prompting a red flag. IndyCar star Scott McLaughlin ended up eighth in class, 0.844s behind the pace.
Ford Multimatic Motorsports’ Christopher Mies impressed by setting the Ford Mustang GT3 fastest in GTD Pro with a 1m46.494s lap on just the fifth of its 38 logged laps.
James Calado in the No. 62 Risi Competizione Ferrari 296 GT3 finished 0.266s behind Mies in the GTD Pro class.
Wright Motorsports’ Jan Heylen secured the top spot in GTD, with the No. 120 Porsche 911 GT3 R hitting a 1m46.741s lap.
