A‍ grave health alert ⁤has been issued by ⁣the U.S. Centers ⁣for Disease Control and⁣ Prevention ⁢(CDC) regarding a‌ deadly type of the mpox virus spreading in the Democratic Republic of ‌the Congo (DRC) on Thursday, December 7th, 2023.

The CDC ⁢is alerting⁢ about the potential spread of a subtype of the⁤ mpox‍ virus called Clade I‍ in ‍travelers who have visited DRC.

Clade I is generally more infectious and can lead to‍ more severe infections than the milder subtype called ‍Clade II. ‌The CDC adds ⁤that Clade I has not yet been reported in the United ⁢States at this time.

Recent evidence⁤ has⁢ indicated for the first‌ time that Clade ‍I ⁣can be transmitted through sexual contact,‍ which has⁢ proven to be the main mode of transmission for the‍ less deadly strain of the ⁢disease that emerged globally last year, particularly among gay, bisexual, ‍and other men who have sex with‌ men.

It was previously believed that ⁢both types ‌of mpox, which causes symptoms similar to the flu and pus-filled skin lesions, ⁣were⁣ spread primarily⁣ through close contact among humans after passing from an ‌infected animal‌ through bites, scratches, hunting, or cooking.
