Hunter Biden was hit with some major charges on Thursday, with the U.S. Department of Justice accusing him of dodging taxes for several years. The case was handed to Judge Mark Scarsi, who was appointed by ex-President Donald Trump, adding another layer of political intrigue.
Biden stands accused of skipping out on paying taxes, filing fake forms, and avoiding getting assessed. These charges are no joke, with three of the nine being serious felony counts.
The indictment, spanning 56 pages, claims that Biden schemed for four years to avoid paying over $1.4 million in federal taxes for the period 2016-2019. Instead, he spent lavishly on a flashy lifestyle, racking up millions in expenses and leaving his tax bills unpaid.
The charges were brought forward by Special Counsel David Weiss, specially appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland to handle the Biden investigation.
If convicted on all nine counts, Biden could be looking at a whopping 17 years behind bars, according to Reuters.
In a statement to Newsweek, Biden’s lawyer, Abbe Lowell, suggested that the charges have been politically motivated and insisted that the case be dismissed.
There’s a lot more to unpack in this ongoing saga, so stay tuned as the legal battle unfolds.
