Happy Birthday, Mr. Baseball! Today we’re celebrating legendary Brewers broadcaster Bob Uecker with some of our favorite stories.
The time he aged two years on one birthday
Robert George Uecker was born in Milwaukee on Jan. 26, 1934 — despite what his baseball card might say. Uecker didn’t pay much attention to this mistake until he turned 80, but when he did, he set the record straight and made a joke about it, saying: “If I was going to cheat on my age, I would certainly make it more than one year.” Classic Uecker humor!
From St. Boniface to the big leagues
Uecker’s baseball career started long before his time in the big leagues. Growing up near Borchert Field in Milwaukee, Uecker was surrounded by baseball from a young age. Although he’s best known as a catcher, Uecker actually began as a pitcher and had a pretty amazing fastball. Even though he didn’t make it as a pitcher, he eventually found his place behind the plate and became a beloved figure in the baseball world.
