China’s Rapid Approval of Over 40 AI Models: What You Need to Know

China has officially approved over 40 AI models in the past six months, marking a significant step forward in the country’s artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities. This move demonstrates China’s strong commitment to competing with the United States in the rapidly evolving field of AI development.

Reports from Chinese media reveal that regulators in China have given the green light to a total of 14 large language models (LLMs) in the latest round of approvals, bringing the total number of approved AI models to over 40. Some of the notable recipients of these approvals include 4Paradigm, Xiaomi Corp, and 01. AI.

The regulatory framework for AI in China was put in place last August, requiring tech companies to seek approval before making their LLMs accessible to the public. This strategic approach reflects China’s emphasis on fostering AI technology while maintaining strict oversight and control.

Following the initial batch of approvals in August, subsequent rounds were approved in November and December 2023, with the latest batch being approved recently. The exact list of approved companies has not been disclosed, but these developments underscore China’s dedication to AI development in the global landscape.

China’s push for artificial intelligence development gained momentum following the global impact of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in 2022. By December, Baidu’s Ernie Bot, a prominent ChatGPT-like chatbot, had amassed over 100 million users, further solidifying China’s position in AI technology.

Looking ahead, China is expected to continue its investments in AI infrastructure, talent development, innovation, and deployment of AI across various sectors. The government has also implemented supportive policies to bolster AI development, directing financial resources toward research, development, and commercialization.

Projections indicate that China’s AI industry spending is expected to reach $14.75 billion by 2026, constituting approximately 10% of the global total, and maintaining a compound annual growth rate exceeding 20% from 2021 to 2026.

While China has the potential to lead in data integration and industrial intelligence, it may face challenges in multilingual global applications compared to the US. The competition between China and the US in the AI industry encompasses technological, economic, military, and political dimensions, setting the stage for a dynamic and evolving landscape.
