China’s Spectacular Sea Launch of Smart Dragon-3 Rocket (Video)

China Successfully Launches Smart Dragon-3 Rocket from Sea

China recently achieved its 10th successful sea launch using a specifically converted floating barge and a solid rocket. The Smart Dragon-3 solid rocket launched from a mobile sea platform off the coast of Yangjiang, a city in South China’s Guangdong province, in the early hours of Feb. 3, Beijing time.

The rocket, standing at 102 feet tall, carried nine satellites into space on this mission. Among them were the NExSat-1 remote sensing satellite for Egypt and Xingshidai-18, which is an experimental networking satellite developed by ADA Space and integrates communication, high-resolution remote sensing, and artificial intelligence capabilities.

Operated by China Rocket, Smart Dragon-3 is a product of the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology (CALT), the manufacturer of China’s Long March rockets. The company is now focusing on increasing the frequency of Smart Dragon-3 launches after successfully completing its third mission.

Jin Xin, the chief commander of the Smart Dragon-3 rocket, mentioned in an interview with China Central Television (CCTV) that their goal is to enhance the rocket’s reliability, cost-efficiency, and safety to prepare for mass production and reduce lead times as much as possible. The rocket is capable of delivering payloads weighing up to 3,300 pounds to a sun synchronous orbit 310 miles above Earth.

This successful sea launch marked China’s 10th overall and followed the impressive debut launch of the Gravity-1 rocket in January. The country’s sea launch facilities are located at the Haiyang spaceport in Shandong province, operated by the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center.

China’s space industry is rapidly evolving, with a strong focus on enhancing technology and increasing launch capabilities. With a series of successful launches under its belt, China is establishing itself as a key player in the global space sector.
