Exciting times in Iowa as Republican presidential candidates come together again, just a few days after a heated debate and with the all-important caucuses just around the corner. Saturday brought Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, and businessman Vivek Ramaswamy to northwest Iowa for a chance to share their visions without any interruptions. This more rural, conservative part of the state is the perfect backdrop for their campaign speeches at Dordt University in Sioux Center, alongside U.S. Rep. Randy Feenstra and his wife, Lynette, to discuss faith, family, and politics. The auditorium was packed with hundreds of people, including many students from the small Christian college.
The pressure is on for attention-grabbing performances as the countdown to the Jan. 15 contest, which starts the GOP nominating calendar, continues. Former President Donald Trump leads comfortably in polls of Republicans in Iowa and nationwide, although he did not attend Saturday’s event.
DeSantis, Haley, and Ramaswamy were last seen together in Iowa before Thanksgiving, at the Family Leader’s roundtable discussion, which was an uncommonly friendly gathering. Their next stop will be at Drake University in Des Moines for a Republican debate just five days before the caucuses.
