The Challenge of Managing High Demand for Popular Games
The rush of players trying to access games like Palworld and Helldivers 2 can be compared to a frenzied stampede, putting a huge strain on the company’s servers. Unlike securing tickets for a Bruce Springsteen concert, where availability is limited, keeping online games running smoothly requires constant server support, especially during peak playing hours.
The recent success of games like Helldivers 2 and Palworld highlights the ongoing challenge of managing high player demand for live service games. While some vendors claim to have solutions to handle this issue by offering backend support to game developers, the problem persists. To gain more insight, several game launch service providers were interviewed regarding this issue.
Pocket Pair’s Palworld, often described as “Pokemon with guns,” attracted over 25 million players within a month of its release, with two million players joining on the first day alone. This overwhelming response led to many players facing difficulties accessing the game due to increasing demand.
The launch of Arrowhead Game Studios’ Helldivers 2, supported by Microsoft’s Playfab, also faced server overload issues, causing stability and connectivity problems for players. Despite the struggles faced by both developers, third-party service providers such as Pragma, Hathora, and others have attempted to address the challenges posed by a large player base.
Although millions of copies of Helldivers 2 have been sold, there has been no detailed analysis of the backend services’ performance during the game’s launch. This lack of transparency raises important questions about the technology and infrastructure supporting popular online games like Palworld and Helldivers 2.
