Eddie Kramer is open to using Beatles-like AI techniques to restore more lost Jimi Hendrix tapes

The world of music was rocked earlier this year with the release of an AI-assisted final Beatles song. Legendary producer Eddie Kramer has hinted that he is open to a similar approach with Hendrix tapes.

In an interview on The Vinyl Guide podcast, Kramer discussed the potential of new technologies, which were recently used by the surviving members of The Beatles, and how they could be applied to both studio and live Hendrix recordings.

“I’m sure if we found another tape where Jimi’s voice is buried, I know I could use something similar,” he said. “I have used [the technology] before but now it’s going to be on a much higher-level.”

Pressed about the possibility of a new release, Kramer responded, “I would hesitate to use ‘around the corner’ because that corner could be quite lengthy, [but] hopefully, yes.”

The AI-assisted final Beatles song, titled Now and Then, was made possible by new technologies that allowed for precise instrument and vocal isolation. This development has sparked interest and excitement across the music industry.

Kramer wants to make it clear, though, that while the technology used may be advanced, it is not necessarily true artificial intelligence. He stated, “When one uses the phrase ‘AI’, it is really advanced digital manipulation, and now the technology has become so evolved that here is a cassette tape of John [Lennon] playing piano, and now they are able to isolate the voice.”

Kramer’s latest project involves tidying up a previously unheard recording of guitarist Jimi Hendrix performing at the Hollywood Bowl in August ’67. With his careful attention to detail and new technology, there may be more unheard Hendrix recordings on the horizon.

It’s an exciting time for music fans as the boundaries of what is possible with technology continue to be pushed in the pursuit of uncovering lost treasures from music history.
