An exciting space mission is set to launch to the moon during Christmas Eve this year. The Peregrine Lunar Lander, named after the fastest flying bird on Earth, will zoom through space and eventually touch down on the moon’s surface. This mission will mark the first to launch under NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative.
Peregrine’s payloads will include a variety of scientific instruments sponsored by NASA. One such instrument, the “Peregrine ion trap mass spectrometer” (PITMS), aims to study the lunar exosphere using mass spectrometry. Other payloads include a neutron spectrometer system to measure the amount of neutrons near the lunar surface and their associated energies.
