Big Changes Coming to the NFL Trade Deadline
The NFL will be hosting its annual meetings in Orlando next week, where discussions will likely include potential alterations to the league’s trade deadline. Multiple teams have suggested a change to the existing bylaws, proposing to extend the deadline by one or two weeks.
Teams such as the San Francisco 49ers, Pittsburgh Steelers, Philadelphia Eagles, Cleveland Browns, New York Jets, Washington Commanders, and Detroit Lions have all expressed interest in pushing the trade deadline back. Recently, reports have surfaced indicating that these teams are looking to move the deadline from Week 8 to Week 10. However, there is still uncertainty surrounding the approval of this proposal, as some owners and general managers remain divided on the matter.
With the introduction of a 17th game on the schedule, there is a compelling argument to shift the trade deadline to Week 9. Browns general manager Andrew Berry highlighted the significant disparity between the NFL’s current trade deadline and that of other major sports leagues. Baseball and basketball typically have their trade deadlines after around 65% of games have been played, while hockey’s deadline comes after 78% of games. In contrast, the NFL’s trade deadline falls when only 45% of games have been completed. Moving the deadline to Week 9 would bring it more in line with other leagues, ensuring the integrity of the season is maintained.
It remains to be seen whether the proposal to move the trade deadline will garner enough support from team executives. As discussions unfold at the upcoming meetings in Orlando, the future of the NFL trade deadline hangs in the balance.
