An up-and-coming prospect in the 2024 NFL Draft showcased an extraordinary performance at the recent NFL Scouting Combine held in Lucas Oil Stadium.
In particular, Chop Robinson, an edge rusher from Penn State, received high praise from ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr., who predicted him to be selected by the 49ers at the 31st overall pick in a recent mock draft. Robinson, standing at 6 feet 3 inches and weighing 254 pounds, displayed remarkable speed for a player in his position.
During the combine, Robinson posted an unofficial 40-yard dash time of 4.49 seconds, an impressive feat on its own. However, what truly stood out was his remarkable 10-yard split time of 1.54 seconds, setting a new record for edge rushers weighing over 250 pounds at the combine.
Robinson’s remarkable performance drew attention on social media, with many highlighting his unprecedented 10-yard split time, showcasing his exceptional speed and agility.
While the combine results are just one aspect of a player’s evaluation, Robinson’s 40-yard dash time of 4.54 seconds compares favorably to other notable edge rushers in recent years, such as Nick Bosa and Will Anderson Jr.
In addition to his impressive speed, Robinson also achieved a 10’8 broad jump, becoming only the second player in combine history to achieve a sub-4.50 40-yard dash time and a broad jump exceeding 10’5. The only other player to achieve this feat was Vernon Davis, who was selected by the 49ers in the 2006 NFL Draft.
Following Dee Ford’s departure, the 49ers have been in need of a top-tier edge rusher to complement players like Bosa. The lack of pressure generated from the other defensive players in the 2023 NFL season, as per Pro Football Focus, emphasizes this need.
While envisioning Robinson as a valuable addition to the 49ers’ defense is enticing, his standout performance at the combine may have significantly raised his draft stock, potentially placing him out of reach for the 49ers’ current draft position.
