NBA Veteran Scot Pollard Celebrates Heart Transplant Milestone at Hospital

Jason Owens

After nearly two weeks following a heart transplant, Scot Pollard was discharged from the hospital in high spirits. The former NBA player and Kansas center marked this significant moment by ringing the bell at the Vanderbilt Transplant Center in Nashville, Tennessee, causing an outpouring of applause from the hospital staff who gathered to witness this emotional milestone. His wife Dawn captured the touching moment on social media.

While the specific reason for the bell-ringing was not explicitly stated by Pollard or Dawn, it symbolized his exit from the medical facility. This tradition of ringing a bell is often associated with important milestones, similar to cancer patients completing their final chemotherapy sessions. Pollard, dressed in regular clothes, exuded joy and optimism as he participated in this celebratory act.

Admitted to the ICU on February 7 due to a heart condition exacerbated by a genetic disorder causing excessive heartbeats, Pollard’s journey culminated in this victorious moment on Thursday. He revealed on February 7 his determination to remain in the hospital until a suitable donor was found for a heart transplant, as previous medical interventions like medications and a pacemaker failed to address his deteriorating condition.

His unwavering resolve was evident as he expressed, “I’m staying here until I get a heart. My heart weakened over time, and the medical experts see this transplant as my best chance for a quicker recovery.”

One of the challenges encountered during the search for a suitable heart was finding one large and strong enough to support Pollard’s athletic physique, standing at 6-foot-11 and weighing 260 pounds during his NBA career.

In a social media update on February 16, Dawn expressed her gratitude as doctors identified a compatible heart for Pollard, describing it as “big, powerful, and a perfect fit!” Images shared by her showed Pollard preparing for the transplant, with his head, face, and chest being shaved in anticipation of the life-saving procedure. She extended her heartfelt thanks to the donor’s family for their selfless act.

In a subsequent update, Dawn informed her followers that the surgery went smoothly, with Pollard progressing well post-operation as depicted in video updates showing him moving and walking independently.

A video on February 26 showcased Pollard’s remarkable recovery, as he displayed a positive demeanor while walking unassisted, free from medical devices and IV connections.
