Situated between the Vanoise National Park and the Italian border, Bessans is a small resort with a big reputation. Its vast high-altitude plateau is a haven for Nordic skiers, boasting over 83 miles of dedicated cross-country routes. Additionally, Bessans is home to the Haute Maurienne Vanoise International Biathlon Centre (MHVIBC), a modern stadium dedicated to the rapidly growing winter sport of biathlon.
Combining cross-country skiing and rifle shooting, modern biathlon has evolved from a Norwegian military exercise to one of the most popular winter sports today. Our group of beginners eagerly took on the challenge, starting with balance exercises which proved to be more challenging than expected. With lightweight skis and a unique skating technique, the learning curve was steep but exhilarating.
After a few hours of practice, we were introduced to the .22 pellet rifle, ready to try our hand at shooting. Under the guidance of expert instructors, we honed our skills and learned the correct shooting posture. The experience was both challenging and incredibly rewarding, providing a new way to enjoy the mountains of Bessans.
